Who: Imaginary Future (*used to be Imaginary Friend)
Genre: Acoustic Folk Pop
Social Media: official website // youtube // soundcloud // facebook
Thanks to Kina Grannis, I've discovered one of the most talented singers I've ever had the honour of listening to. I believe Kina's also an amazing artist, but I know a good amount of people who have fallen in love with her already, so instead I wanted to take this opportunity to showcase artists that are relatively unknown in the social media community.
I remember listening to a Foster the People cover of Pumped Up Kicks by Kina and Imaginary Future back in 2011 and that was the first time I've ever heard of him. Apparently, he's been opening Kina's concerts, as she mentioned at the end of that cover (I wouldn't know since I've never been to any of her concerts, *tear). The two lovebirds are actually married. Fyi: they're perfect together, in every possible way.
Basically: Imaginary Future is a savvy guitar-player with an ingenious talent for song-writing, and listening to his voice will undoubtedly give you the biggest eargasms. He's also not so difficult to look at, which is always (alwayss) a plus. ;)
Also! He and Kina have recently announced a tour this coming May, and (cross your fingers!) I might be able to see them live this time!
Personal favourites of his:
1. I Knew This Would Be Love ft. Kina Grannis
He had this song up on youtube about 2 years ago as an original, singing individually. However, he had recently uploaded the video above featuring Kina last August. I believe she's also singing for some of his songs in his album, Fire Escape. I just love their voices together!
2. We Are the Love We Give
I first heard of this song on his soundcloud a few months back, but now I can't find the link/video of this on any of his personal social media accounts! Sucks, but it is on youtube (we're all thankful for those unknown youtube accounts who posts all the music we can think of online!).
"We are the love we give" was one of the principles I lived by for a while now. Discovering this song was just a perfect "WIN" moment, because I now have something to fall back to when I'm a bit out of place. I always have this saved on my phone for emergencies. Having an anxiety disorder can be quite exhausting and impractical when you're a student (or in any case, really). So, I use any sort of quick, sometimes temporary, pick-me-ups - and this song is one of them! The words are exactly what I need to hear before/during/after a panic episode. To add, the way it's composed gives such an up-beat and uplifting feel to it that you are always left satiated with its bountiful light after you've had even just one listen. Essentially, this song almost perfectly resonates with my personality and the way I put things into perspective.
3. April ft. Kina Grannis
I've been itching for a visual representation for April ever since the first time hearing it, so you can guess how ecstatic I was when I found out about the music video! Imaginary Future (or whoever directs his music videos) always has such an eye for conceptual representations of his pieces. From a chainsaw to salt and pepper shakers, he has never failed to keep things interesting.
This song specifically reminds me of my relationship with an incredible friend of mine, with whom I've been through an avalanche of headaches and bruises. I don't exactly find myself an expert in "letting go", and so it gave me a hard hit when listening to this song the first time. Again, the lyrics literally took my breath away, as I listened without consciously knowing I've held my breath for the entire time.
